With these heat the overheating of the motor can cause serious damage to our Vespas. Yes, we are not the only ones to suffer from the hot summer season, even the two wheels can be affected and engine overheating can damage the vehicle as a whole! Let's find out together how to avoid it and what can be the triggering causes.

Engine overheating: alarm bells

To avoid overheating of the Vespa engine you have to pay attention to a series of alarm bells which, if neglected, could damage our beautiful two wheels.

When engines overheat, they become very noisy and deliver the power irregularly, with sudden drops in the `` cavallery '' and starting problems could occur. Also, excessive temperatures do decrease the oil level, because the lubricant tends to evaporate. This aspect represents a problem, as in air engines the lubricant helps the cooling of the engine itself.

Overheated engine: what are the causes?

The overheated engine can bring a series of damage in terms of performance, the severity of which depends on a number of factors:

  • Number of rotations at which the heating took place.

  • Engine temperature at the time the piston touched the cylinder liner. If an engine warms up at low temperatures, the injury and loss of performance is minimal, when warming occurs at high temperatures, it may be useful to polish the engine.

  • Carburation, i.e. ratio between air and gasoline.

What to do if the engine overheats

During the hottest months, the excessive thermal expansion due to the increase in temperatures causes the expansion of the pistonuntil it touches the cylinder liner.

So what to do if the engine overheats? Here are some solutions:

  • Keep an eye on the oil level and cylinder lubrication. We advise you to put a couple of oil caps on each tank filling, so as to have better lubrication thanks to the increase in the concentration of oil in its tank and in that of the petrol;

  • Grease the carburetion. This operation allows you to reduce the amount of air present in the mixture and to increase the life of the engine, even if in terms of performance it has minimal results. Having a slightly more oily carburation helps the engine not to seize.

If you continue to have problems with your Vespa because the engine continues to heat up, you should present the problem to a experienced mechanic. In these cases, in fact, if the damage is minimal it is enough polish the cylinder to remove the lesions and, subsequently, the piston must be replaced.

If, on the other hand, the engine should be seized due to the lack of lubrication, the simple polishing would no longer be enough. In these cases, in fact, it is necessary to grind the cylinder by removing the damaged part of the cylinder barrel to bore it. Subsequently, a new piston with the relative segments must be fitted.
