Le main components of the shock absorbers of a Vespa 50 Special are: the main body of the shock absorber, the spring and the elastic pad screwed onto the shock absorber head.
During replacement, you can evaluate whether to keep and reuse the spring and buffer, or whether to use new ones in case of damage.
When to replace the Vespa 50 Special shock absorbers
- shock absorbers of a Vespa 50 Special are subject to periodic checks and their replacement can take place after evaluating a series of signals, first of all those that can be detected while driving (such as, for example, a soft rear or vehicle instability when cornering or on a straight line at high speed ).Also an visual inspection it can allow the identification of a defect and therefore the need for a replacement if the shock absorber is visibly greasy. Finally, too noise, stress and vibration while driving, they can be caused by elements and components of the shock absorbers that are now worn and defective.
How to change vespa 50 special rear shock absorbers
Replace a Rear shock absorber of a Vespa 50 Special is quite simple. Let's see below how to do it:
- for convenience it is recommended to remove the wheel and placing a support under the engine;
- loosen and remove i bolts of the affected area (also the one connected to the tank compartment);
- then pass one unlocking on the nut and leave it to act for a few minutes so as to be able to loosen and remove the bolts in correspondence with their seats;
- holding the shock absorber still with one hand to prevent it from falling, loosen the nut and replace the new shock absorber and its anti-vibration pad screwing it at the end with the help of a key.
The operation must be completed by positioning and tightening the nut, the buffer in its seat and in the correct position, and, finally, placing the shock absorber in the hole and fixing the bolt in correspondence with the tank, to then tighten everything by inserting the washer and the head nut. When replacing the elements, you will be able to evaluate whether it is necessary to install new bolts rather than using the old ones.
How to change Vespa 50 special front shock absorbers
To change the front shock absorber of a Vespa 50 Special, the procedure is slightly more complicated due to a thread on its stem which, being positioned under the mudguard, is more exposed to atmospheric agents (such as mud and rain).
The research of the nut positioned on the shock absorber head, which must be unscrewed to allow it to be removed, can be difficult due to the working position and the limited space you will have available to operate. In fact, we suggest placing the Vespa lying on its left side with the gear knob resting on the ground, placing cover sheets on the floor to avoid scratches, and using a ratchet wrench with hexagon socket.
After spraying an unblocker on the thread in question and leaving it to act for a few minutes, it is advisable to scrape the damaged surface with a small brush or a mini trap. In case of difficulty, you can break the external plastic casing and hold the upper part with pliers: in this way you can act on the nut and to ensure that the unlocking agent penetrates the thread you will be able to perform successive forward and backward movements. The nut to be removed will be very special, and will be accompanied by a washer and then by the pad (specifically, there are two pads, one above the shock absorber attachment and one below).
To unscrew the lower part of the shock absorber, you will have to remove the cover on the hub and loosen the nuts underneath, memorizing the order of washers and ORings. After that, with a plastic mallet, you can shore up by pushing out the hub, replace the ORings and reinsert the hub.
When extracting the hub, you will notice the presence of two needle bearings which can be filled with grease using a syringe in the greaser and sent until it is completely out of the seat. At this point you can mount the buffer and insert the new shock absorber first in the upper seat (trying to bring the hub outward) and then the pad again in the lower part.
There may be extreme cases, for example when a shock absorber has a lot of trouble coming out due to cast inserts. In this case, you can heat the iron in such a way that the metal expands and tap with a chisel until it is extracted to reinsert it in the shock absorber. The old pad can now be replaced with the new one, completing the operation by inserting the carefully tightened washer and nut. Finally, it will be possible to assemble the hub box by screwing everything and after making sure that you have also inserted the ORings.
