INTAKE MANIFOLDS

The intake manifold is the access corridor for the air-petrol mixture into the engine through the door made up of the reed valve.

The total efficiency of an engine is calculated as the product of various partial returns which are:
- volumetric efficiency
- thermodynamic efficiency
- mechanical efficiency

The volumetric efficiency indicates the ratio between the quantity in volume of mixture that can be introduced into the combustion chamber and the engine displacement.

One of the main factors that affects the volumetric efficiency is the friction loss that encounters the inlet fluid (air-petrol mixture) from the air filter up to the combustion chamber, therefore one of the components that significantly affects this loss is the suction, as all the inlet mixture must pass through it with the minimum possible loss, for this reason it is absolutely necessary to avoid sudden increases in section and sharp edges along the path of the mixture.
Another function of the intake manifold is to act as a buffer for the accumulation of the fresh charge, since the mixture column traveling at a certain speed takes a certain time to stop when the reed valve closes and therefore the mixture accumulates in the manifold. , compressing itself against the lamellae. This is why each collector has its own well-defined range of revolutions within which it expresses the maximum efficiency (tuned collector).
In addition, the manifold performs the task of supporting the carburettor by connecting it to the engine crankcase or cylinder, therefore it also has, if required, the task of damping the vibrations that are transmitted from the crankcase to the carburetor, avoiding the phenomenon of gasoline and air emulsion in the carburetor tray.
