"Optimized" original PX200 elaboration from 18cv! Low Budget (+ BANK VIDEO)

Posted on 09.12.2018

Minimum expense Maximum yield, the right phrase to describe this configuration. The perfect engine when you have a pumped-out 200 and a thin wallet (which is the opposite of an accordion wallet!) ... Buy that aluminum cylinder, throw on a variable advance ignition, how many petals is the reed valve? Carburettor from 30? NO no, this time you will not see any of this!

The customer's word was "make it go fast, be reliable but I don't want to spend a lot", my answer: I OBEY.
But it is precisely in these types of engines that the imagination and the pleasure of reviving tricks from the past come to the surface to successfully complete a particularly fun ... and creative job! I am reminded of the experiments of the past, at the end of the 90s, when I could not afford a cylinder with a chromed barrel but at the Raids I needed to have an extremely reliable engine with excellent performance, especially with high cruising speed. . And then I also remembered the Vespaonline Raid of Tierra del Fuego from Buenos Aires to Usuhiaia in 2005, where the most powerful Vespa of the group without any problem in 8500 km, many of dirt roads, was just a 200 running 60 The smart guy revealed only at the end of the Raid what the "barbatrucco" was!

But let's see what the original P200E cylinder consists of: 66 mm bore, almost four kilos of cast iron with ridiculous transfer ports fed through the piston, the latter massive with a rounded top. Head with that mysterious "USA" writing with the typical compression ratio of motor hoes (some say they are heads for the American market, others say that when you take them apart then you complete the sentence: "USE AND THROW !!"

This is the recipe:
-Cylindro 200 Original rectified and corrected
- Original head recalculated - Silencer Polini Original
-Carburettor 26 26 Pinasco with original filter
-AirBoxes Pinasco
-Motor shaft Pinasco stroke 60
-Original clutch with reinforcement ring and springs Pinasco
-Original Piaggio ignition

Including the overhaul of the bearings, if we do the accounts the total cost is around 500 of parts.

The bench test, as always, is an emotion. When it starts, the engine always catches the attention of those present. It's kind of a celebration. Silenzo, now he speaks. And He mumbles confidently, full and dark as only a 200 can do: TUM TUM TUM as if it were a beating heart.

The excellent balance of the tree Pinasco it greatly reduces the typical vibrations, a Vespa rider accustomed to the 200 earthquake would not recognize this engine. After the due thermal cycle and the perfect carburetion with the lamda probe, the bank starts. The laps go up happily, up up ... over 7500 laps! Feel how it sings ... that I stretch! but what will it be? a polini? a Malossi? A Pinasco? no! none of this! a damned ORIGINAL cylinder!

The response arrives and leaves us pleasantly surprised. We were convinced that we were on 16 hp using an original crankcase with a fixed advance and instead we are at 17.7, almost two more horses. The experimentation and the products of 2017 have paid off! Ultimately this engine transforms the Vespa into a 120km / h racing car, with a cruising speed of 100km / h, ideal for the motorway.

The 21nm low torque allows for an elastic driving perfect for mountain tours and tourism even for extreme travel. Consumption goes from 18 km to 24 km with a liter and with that torque it could also pull the 24-tooth pinion. Reliability is also proverbial, the life of such an engine can be 100000 km by changing only the clutch plates. More than an elaboration it seems almost an optimization, the work that releases hidden horses. A minute of silence for those Vespa enthusiasts who have spent much more to have even less. :-D
See you next time! Luca
