Vespa PX elaboration with Quattrini 244 - Officina Tonazzo (+ VIDEO BANK)

Posted on 09.12.2018

The customer's request is a dream: a complete engine with power over 25 hp, powerful torque at low revs, speed over 130kmh, mixer and rear disc brake, all while maintaining the most complete aesthetic and sound originality .

A kind of concealed weapon port because this is what we are talking about, or rather, heavy artillery. But everything must be within the sphere of originality. I wouldn't be surprised if this customer worked for some secret service ... and if I have to tell the truth ... sometimes I feel like the Mr Q of the situation ..

We come to the configuration:

Carter Pinasco Master 200
Quattrini cylinder 244
Carburetor 26/26 VRX Pinasco with Airbox
Ignition Pinasco Flytec
Crimaz CMX clutch
Sip Road XL muffler

For the construction of an engine like this, nothing is left to chance, various assembly steps are carried out by checking the clearance and centering of the bushings, the bearing seats are rolled to obtain the right interference that must NEVER be taken for granted. Only at the end of all these adjustments does the crankshaft slide like on velvet.

At the first start we are pleasantly surprised by the lack of vibrations. On the test bench the carburetion is checked, the first running in steps of revolutions and thermal cycle, all to protect the thermal unit before the actual cylinder bank.

The first running in is essentially carried out with the braked bench set to a number of revolutions for example 4000, the gas is opened wide until the bench brake intervenes which, by braking the roller, keeps the engine under load at 4000 rpm. It is a kind of swing between 3000 and 5000 revolutions with rhythmic opening and closing of the gas for 20 minutes. This operation serves to break in the crests of the grinding lines on the cylinder, with the opening and closing of the gas the bands work in compression to lap and in the exhaust to drain the metal particles that are created. Do not do it at home without the due experience and without a bench that limits the engine speed! This operation does not exempt the Vespa from not carrying out a correct running-in as prescribed by the manufacturer.

But we finally come to the final bank, after 6 hours of cooling from the first ignition we bring the engine back to temperature, a couple of false launches are used to warm up the thermal and the muffler.

The cylinder bank starts, gas cannon, the engine rises gritty as if there were no roller up to 6000 rpm! then, when the conscience would suggest to remove the gas, the engine continues to turn mightily up to 7500 and then stretches up to 8000 and passes. I admit I gave up the gas because it is enough to know the maximum power but here the overspeed seems to never end! This is not a T5 !! Evidently the muffler provides excellent counter pressure.

On the graph relating to the speed of the roller it is possible to appreciate up to how many km / h the engine is in full thrust.

The engine begins to drop the thrust at 130km / h and then there is the extension that the lucky customer can personally evaluate.

The final thoughts ... well I still have goosebumps from the power I had available on the throttle. For those who want to go fast while maintaining the usability of every day I don't think you can want more! 130km / h are really a lot and the game gets dangerous!

One might wonder on which Vespa this Monster will be mounted ... in our imagination we imagine an immaculate PX with chrome accessories, but which at the right moment can disappear on the horizon by turning the throttle ... but to our Customer we don't ask questions. In the package we will also make him find a Vodka Martini, shaken, not mixed ... to health!
